Author Guidelines
These guidelines are intended to help authors prepare manuscripts that meet the scholarly and technical standards of NUMADURA: Journal of Islamic Studies, Social, and Humanities. Manuscripts that do not conform to these guidelines may be returned to the author for revision prior to peer review.
1. General Requirements
- The manuscript must be written in Indonesian or English, and must be original, unpublished, and not under review for possible publication in any other journal.
- The manuscript must fall within the journal's Focus and Scope and correspond to one of the accepted Article Types: Research Article, Review Article, or Book Review.
- Submitted manuscripts must have clear relevance and make a substantive contribution to Islamic Studies, NU Studies, and/or Madurese Studies.
- The manuscript must be submitted online in Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format through the journal's OJS submission portal: https://journal.pcnusumenep.or.id/index.php/numadura. Submissions via email or other channels will not be considered.
- The Manuscript should be prepared according to the following author guidelines and Template. The writing template can be downloaded here
- Authors are required to prepare their manuscript according to these guidelines and the official NUMADURA manuscript template, available for download on the journal's submission page.
2. Manuscript Length
- Research Articles and Review Articles: minimum 6000 words, inclusive of the reference list.
- Book Reviews: 1,500–2,500 words.
Manuscripts substantially outside these ranges may be returned to the author for adjustment before proceeding to peer review.
3. Manuscript Formatting
- Paper size: A4
- Font: Arial Narrow, 12 pt
- Line spacing: 1.15
- Margins: 2.5 cm on all sides
- Alignment: Justified
- Page numbers: Bottom-center of each page
- Arabic terms, non-English words, and technical terms should be italicized on first use, followed by a brief gloss where necessary (e.g., ijtihad [independent legal reasoning]).
- Transliteration of Arabic terms must follow a consistent, recognized transliteration system (e.g., the Library of Congress or IJMES system) throughout the manuscript.
4. Manuscript Structure
For Research Articles, the manuscript structure must include: Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgment, and References.
a. Title Concise and informative, reflecting the core argument or focus of the study (maximum 15 words).
b. Author(s) Information Full name(s), written without academic titles; institutional affiliation(s); city/country; and the corresponding author's email address.
c. Abstract A single paragraph of 150–250 words, written in both English and Indonesian, clearly and descriptively summarizing the research objective, method, results and discussion, and scholarly implications. Abstracts must not contain citations. This section is single-spaced and set apart from the main body of the article.
d. Keywords 4–6 keywords, separated by semicolons, reflecting the core concepts of the manuscript.
e. Introduction Written without subheadings or numbering, the Introduction should present: the research background and problem statement; the theoretical or empirical gap being addressed; a brief summary of relevant prior research (highlighting the novelty of the present study); the research objectives; and the central argument or hypothesis. The manuscript submitted must be the author's original work and must not have been previously published in another journal or book.
f. Method (for empirical Research Articles) This section should clearly describe the research design, including but not limited to:
· Qualitative approaches — e.g., case study, grounded theory, phenomenology, ethnography, discourse analysis
· Quantitative approaches — e.g., survey, experimental, correlational, comparative research
· Mixed-methods or systematic literature review (SLR) designs.
Authors should specify the unit of analysis (e.g., location, institution, activity, program, artifact, or event), the sources of information (e.g., respondents, informants, texts, manuscripts, documents), and the data collection techniques used (e.g., desk review, observation, interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions). The data analysis procedure should also be described, including the stages of analysis (data reduction, data display, verification) and the analytical method applied (e.g., content analysis, discourse analysis, interpretive analysis, bibliometric analysis, or statistical analysis using SPSS/R/Excel where relevant), with sufficient detail to allow replication or evaluation.
g. Results and Discussion The Results and Discussion should be presented as distinct components:
· Results: Present the key empirical findings (interviews, observations, documents, surveys, or other data) systematically. Findings may be supported with tables, figures, or diagrams, each numbered sequentially. Present data by restating its content, describing the patterns observed, and then interpreting or analyzing what the data shows — rather than merely listing raw data.
· Discussion: Analyze the logical relationship between the findings and the research questions, grounded in relevant literature. This should include a summary of the results, an analysis of causes and implications, a comparison with prior research, and a statement of the study's scholarly contribution.
h. Conclusion Written without bullet points or numbering, the Conclusion should summarize: the most important findings and their significance; the study's scholarly and practical contribution to Islamic Studies, NU Studies, and/or Madurese Studies; and the study's limitations, with recommendations for future research directions.
i. Acknowledgment (optional) Brief recognition of funding sources or non-author contributors to the research.
j. References A complete list of all works cited in the manuscript (see Section 6).
Note: Review Articles and Book Reviews may adapt this structure to fit their format, provided the manuscript maintains a clear analytical structure and logical flow.
5. Tables and Figures
- Tables and figures must be numbered sequentially (e.g., Table 1, Figure 1) and referred to in the text.
- Figure captions and numbers are placed below the corresponding figure; table captions and numbers are placed above the corresponding table.
- Tables should use horizontal lines only (no vertical lines), created using the Word table function rather than inserted as images.
- Figures must be submitted in high resolution (minimum 300 dpi), with a clear, descriptive caption and, where applicable, a source citation.
6. Citation and Reference Style
- NUMADURA uses the APA (American Psychological Association) 7th Edition citation style for both in-text citations and the reference list.
- Authors are required to use a reference management application (Mendeley) to ensure citation accuracy and consistency.
- A minimum of 80% of references must be drawn from journal articles published within the last 10 years; authors are strongly encouraged to prioritize internationally indexed journals (e.g., Scopus) and nationally accredited journals (e.g., SINTA). Excessive reliance on textbooks, unpublished theses, or non-scholarly websites should be avoided.
- Every source cited in-text must appear in the reference list, and vice versa.
7. Language and Style
- Manuscripts must be written in formal, precise academic prose, avoiding colloquialisms, redundant phrasing, and excessive use of the passive voice.
- Authors whose first language is not the language of submission are encouraged to have their manuscript professionally proofread or edited prior to submission.
- Quotations from primary sources (e.g., Qur'anic verses, hadith, classical texts) must include the original language (where relevant), an accurate translation, and a precise citation of the source.
8. Originality and Similarity Index
Every submitted manuscript must be free from plagiarism, screened using plagiarism detection software (e.g., Turnitin) prior to peer review. The maximum permissible similarity index is 20%, excluding quotations, references, and the bibliography (see Publication Ethics).
9. Ethical and Authorship Statements
Upon submission, authors are required to confirm that:
- The manuscript is original and has not been published or submitted elsewhere.
- All listed authors have contributed substantively to the work and approved the final manuscript.
- Any conflicts of interest have been disclosed.
- Ethical approval has been obtained where the research involves human subjects, sensitive data, or fieldwork requiring informed consent.
10. Submission Process
Manuscripts must be submitted online through the journal's OJS submission portal: https://journal.pcnusumenep.or.id/index.php/numadura. Submissions via email or other channels will not be considered. Authors are advised to consult and use the journal's official manuscript template, available on the journal's website, before submission.
11. Manuscript Template
Authors are strongly encouraged to prepare their manuscript using the official NUMADURA manuscript template to ensure formatting consistency prior to peer review. The template can be downloaded from the journal's submission page.
